From legendary warungs to world-class dining — our honest guide to eating extraordinarily well in Canggu at every budget.
Canggu's food scene covers everything from cheap warung classics to world-class dining.
Canggu's food scene has exploded over the last five years — and we mean that in the best possible way. What was once a sleepy surf village now has some of the most exciting, diverse and genuinely delicious restaurants in all of Southeast Asia. The best part? You can eat extraordinarily well here at almost any budget.
We've spent years eating our way through every warung, café and fine dining room in Canggu. These are the places we keep coming back to — and the ones we recommend to every guest who stays with us at Casa de Loto.
This tiny, no-frills warung tucked down a side street off Jl Batu Bolong is, in our opinion, home to the best nasi goreng in Canggu. The portions are generous, the prices are laughably cheap (around 25k IDR), and there's always a queue — which tells you everything. Cash only, plastic chairs, and absolutely no decor to speak of. Perfect.
Canggu's café scene is world-class — flat whites and avocado toast have never tasted better.
Set in a beautiful bamboo structure surrounded by rice fields, The Shady Shack is the gold standard for healthy eating in Canggu. The menu is almost entirely plant-based, the smoothie bowls are legendary, and the lunch crowd on a sunny day is one of the most photogenic things you'll see in Bali. Book ahead or arrive early — it fills up fast.
Another favourite for healthy, entirely plant-based food. The rainbow bowls and burgers are excellent, and the space is gorgeous. Great for a relaxed breakfast or lunch.
Part café, part motorbike customisation shop, part surf brand, part live music venue — Deus is an institution. The food is good (the burgers especially), the coffee is great, and the energy is uniquely Canggu. Sit outside with a flat white and watch the world go by. You'll understand why people never leave.
Right on Batu Bolong beach, Old Man's is the quintessential Canggu beach bar. Cold Bintangs, decent burgers, live music most nights, and some of the best people-watching in Bali. It gets busy and loud after sunset — which is exactly the point.
Bright colours, loud music, excellent margaritas and genuinely good Mexican food. Motel Mexicola is the most fun you can have on a Friday night in Canggu. The tacos are solid, the atmosphere is electric, and the cocktails are dangerously good. Book a table or prepare to wait.
One of Canggu's longest-standing restaurants, Betelnut serves beautifully executed Indonesian and Asian fusion dishes in a lush garden setting. The satay platter is essential, the cocktail list is excellent, and the atmosphere is relaxed but special. Perfect for a birthday dinner or a treat-yourself evening.
For a more refined dining experience, Mason in Pererenan (just north of Canggu) is outstanding. Chef Ryan Clift's stunning 200-year-old Joglo space serves creative, modern cuisine with Indonesian influences. One of the best restaurants in all of Bali.
The original speciality coffee spot in Canggu, Crate is still the best. The flat whites are flawless, the avocado toast is a cliché for a reason, and the outdoor seating area is a lovely place to spend a slow morning.
French-owned bakery with exceptional croissants, sourdough and pastries. The coffee is great and the breakfast menu is one of the most satisfying in Canggu. Multiple locations — the Berawa branch is our favourite.
Old Man's on Batu Bolong beach — cold beers, live music, and the best people-watching in Canggu.
When the restaurants close, the warungs stay open. The night market area along Jl Raya Canggu has local stalls serving mie goreng, sate, and fresh fruit until well past midnight. This is Bali at its most real — cheap, delicious, and completely unpretentious.
Stay at Casa de Loto in Canggu or Unite By The Sea in Uluwatu — our private villas put you right in the heart of it all.
